We’ve begun sowing our last round of crops for the three sisters plot: beans. We have chosen Genuine Cornfield. These are beauties with green pods and mottled reddish brown beans; pre-Colombian genetics once again. We sow three beans around each established corn stalk. (This corn is only three-weeks old!) The corn will continue to grow and give support to the beans. The beans will provide much-needed nitrogen to the corn.
This is the entirety of the three sisters plot. Notice the grasses, legumes, and broadleaf weeds already present. Three sisters garden is an imitation of this very ecosystem.
The clearing has been growing back, and three rows have been double-dug. We are adding a finer texture soil as the seed bed, which will be worked in and weeded with a stirrup hoe once seedlings emerge before thinning.
Our first plot has come a long way, but we haven’t even harvested anything yet, and in the next few weeks, we are going to build two more smaller plots for cabbages.
